It is clearly a modified copy from "When in Rome do as the Romans do". It can have two possibility meanings. Firstly; it invites to disobey the rules. But secondly; most of students don't pay attention in class already, so if you think about it for a bit longer, you can find out that the phrase is an opposition in itself - if you shouldn't act like a 'normal' student, then you should pay attention, which is what isn't often done.

The Akan are a large ethnic/linguistic group of western Africa.
The areas with the largest Akan populations are Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire.

The Akan are made up of many different different groups:

the order in which they were born, or the circumstances of their births

I find it really interesting that Adom means Man, and it's very similar to our Adam, which means the same thing!

They sound a lot like the surinamese afro names..and I used to read a lot of anansi stories when I was little
