Now we come to the Patriarch Jacob!
Jacob and his brother Esau were twins.
Esau was born first, and Jacob came out clutching his twins heel.
Because of this he was named Jacob, 'Grasper of the heel',
Later God changed his name to Israel which means 'God Struggles' or 'God's Prince.'
Jacob had a family life that gives new meaning to the word complicated!
Jacob had wanted to marry only Rachel, but was tricked into marrying her sister Leah as well.
Leah bore Jacob four sons: Reuben, Simeon Levi and Judah.
For a long time Rachel couldn't have children and so she
gave Jacob her servant Bilhah as a concubine
Bilhah had two sons Dan and Naphtali.
Leah later gave Jacob her servant Zilpah as a concubine
Zilpah gave birth to Gad and Asher.
Later Leah had three more children of her own:
Issachar, Zebulun and Dinah.
Rachel finally had two children; Joseph and Benjamin.
Joseph would later marry the Egyptian woman, Asenath
Asenath bore two sons; Manassah and Ephraim.
All of Jacob's sons became the ancestors of the tribes of Israel. Joseph's two sons each became ancestors of a tribe as well.
