The Canaanites were neighbors with the ancient Hebrews/Israelites.
Time after time GOD warned them not to inner-marry with them or worship their gods
But time after time the Hebrews did so any way and suffered as a result.
*********************
Notes
The title Baal (Master) was usually applied to Hadad, but could be applied to any god
Canaanite gods were worshiped at shrines called High Places
Many groves were consecrated to specific gods and used for worship
Date palm trees are considered sacred to Athirat
Asherah Poles were carved from wood/stone and used in worship
Ritual bloodletting, prostitution and castration were regularly practiced in Canaanite worship
Human sacrifice was also practiced.
Many cities and hills were named in honor of the gods:
Bamoth Baal (High Place of Baal)
Baal Meon (Lord of the House)
Baal Gad (Lord of Fortune)
Beth Shemesh (House of the Sun)
Baal Hermon (Mountain of the Chief)
Mt. Hermon had many High places for Canaanite worship

All of this has reminds me of GOD's First Commandment:
You shall have no other gods before Me. Ex 20:3
For all the gods of the peoples are idols, But the LORD made the heavens.
I Chronicles 16:26
I am the LORD, and there is no other. There is no God besides Me.
Isaiah 45:5
You shall worship the LORD your GOD and HIM only you shall serve.
Matthew 4:10
But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons,
and not to God:
And I would not that you should have fellowship with demons. I Cor 10:20
I pray that we all remember that. And that we not get so caught up in the study
and art of false gods that we ignore the real One!
