In 2258, while still a cadet, he was instrumental in the defeat of Nero, the Romulan from the future responsible  for the destruction of Vulcan and bent on the obliteration of the rest of the Federation.  In the process, Kirk proved himself to be an exceptional commanding officer, fully capable of commanding a Starship even under the most dire circumstances. As a result, he was promoted directly to Captain and given command of the USS Enterprise, the Federation’s newest Flagship and the most coveted ship in the Fleet.

Tragically, little more than a month after this triumph, Kirk was brutally raped while on shore leave. Worse, the crew of the 
Enterprise, most of whom were recent graduates themselves, didn’t give him the support that he desperately needed. Not realizing the situation and believing that Kirk, who had a reputation as a womanizer,  had simply gotten into a brawl during one of his sexcapades, they showed him nothing but disproval, avoidance and outright mockery.

The pain of their betrayal added to the already devastating trauma of the rape, led Kirk to resign command of the Enterprise and sever all ties with his former crewmates; with the exception of his closest friend, Dr Leonard McCoy who left the Enterprise with him.

Kirk returned to Earth and successfully pressed charges against his rapists. After spending months recovering emotionally he returned to active duty and applied for another ship. Wanting no reminders of his past he requested a vessel that was as different from the Enterprise as possible. He was awarded the USS Saratoga, a Delphis class science vessel.


Although in command of a science vessel, Kirk was foremost an adventurer and during his tenure the Saratoga numerous time came to the aid of ships and worlds in crisis. She also went on may exploratory surveys that took her further than most ships in the Fleet had gone. In 2265 she became the first of her class to discover and chart unknown sectors of space.

Despite her many unorthodox missions, the Saratoga was still a science vessel and, under Kirk she made many significant scientific discoveries. The Saratoga also forged strong bonds with the captains of the other Delphis ships and formed what came to be known
as the Delphis Pod

In 2265 the Saratoga was attacked and crippled by the Klingon Commander Kor. Kirk evacuated his crew and piloted the Saratoga headlong into the Klingon vessel, destroying both he survived thanks to the intervention of Q.

Soon after he was given command of a new and larger ship, the USS Endeavor
