I had so much trouble coming up with a name for my elf character for my LOTR fanfic, so I decided to check this out, but I realized they all were taken. Awesome job though. I used a Sindarin dictionary to make up a name, but I think it's a bit too bulky for an elleth.

Some of these are actually pretty good, and Lalaith was one of my first consideration. Tell me what you think of my chosen name. Caranariel. Her nickname is Cara, and I chose it because it means "maiden crowned with red fire," and she has red hair. It was a pain to make up. If u like the name, please ask before using. Just a precaution.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am almost certain Aredhel and a few of the others on here are actually Sindarin names. Also, 'Amilesse' isn't a name for a female but, rather, the term for a name given by one's mother, so I am not sure it has a place here. :)

Also, Nerdanel has other possible meanings, as well, I think -- such as interpreting the 'Ner' to refer to men somehow, like in 'Nerwen.'

That said, it's a nice, easy-to-read list and a nice reference! :) Aside from hunting through the glossaries at the back, it can be hard to figure out what names mean, sometimes.

Ar * eth * el, though I forget which syllable should have the accent. ^^; Still, the "dh" character combination is pronounced more or less as a th. :)

So... Maedhros would again have the th sound for the dh. my (like the possessive pronoun; in Sindarin, the ae diphthong is pronounced aye) * thros

Hope that helps? :)

Is it right when I use one name in my book?
(in the case you haven't read my other comments: I'm trying to write a fantasy-book:))
One of my female characters didn't have a name before I saw this....But now I'd like to call her 'Indis'

Well you'd have to ask Tolkien! :)
I just wrote down what I read in his books.

Well actually I guessed, piecing together what I knew of Quenya/Sindar word meanings.
I don't think they ever wrote down an official meaning.

Some of these would definitely be good dragon names in my books. Except then what would it be like if my books were released in that country? Hmm...
