This is Lieutenant Monica Deerhorn.
She’s a security officer onboard the USS Saratoga which James T Kirk commands in my AU New Start verse.

She was born Monica Pierson in Manitoba, Canada in 2228.
She came from a military background; her maternal grandmother Corporal J McKenzie had been
a member of M.A.C.O. (Military Assault Command Operations) and had served on the Enterprise NX
under Captain Archer during the Xindi Crisis. Her paternal grandfather, also a member of M.A.C.O.
had seen service during the Earth-Romulan War. Both of her parents were Starfleet Security Officers.

With this background it was perhaps to be expected that she would follow in the same path and she enrolled
in Starfleet in 2246. She considered Command but decided that she was better in Security as opposed to Tactical.
She often says that she's a soldier at heart.

In 2252 she was assigned to USS Arbiter. While there she met another security officer, Lieutenant Karl Deerhorn. 
They married in 2255 and in 2257 their daughter Trisha was born.

A missile cruiser that patrolled hostile areas was no place to raise a child and the two of them were in the process
of applying for transfers when Karl was killed in a planetary skirmish, leaving Monica a widow with a four month
old daughter. Shortly afterwards, Deerhorn was transferred to the USS Saratoga, a small science vessel and one
of the few types of ships in the Fleet that permitted families.

Personality-wise Deerhorn is dedicated, focused and very aware of duty. She's a straightforward woman
and one always knows where they stand with her. She’s fiercely protective of her daughter and a devoted mother.

She greatly admires and respects her direct superior, Lieutenant Commander Clarice Hatcher, Chief of Security
