French Guiana is an overseas region of France on the northern coast of South America.
It is bordered by Brazil in the east and south, and Suriname in the west.
Cayenee is the capital.

HISTORY
The area was originally inhabited by a number of Amerindian groups, including the Carib,
Taino, Emerillon, Galibi, Palikur,Wayampi (also known as Oyampi), and Wayana.
In 1498 Christopher Columbus sailed to the region during his third voyage.
During the 17th century French colonists settled along the coast.
Slaves were brought out from Africa to work plantations
In 1848 slavery was abolished.
Many former slaves moved into the rainforest and set up Maroon communities.
In 1850 several shiploads of Indians, Malays and Chinese were brought to work the plantations
These new arrivals gravitated toward shops and businesses
During the 19th century French Guiana was used as a French penal colony.
Many convicts died from disease and malnutrition.
From 1852-1951 the offshore, Devils Island, was used to house political
prisoners or for solitary confinement.
The island became infamous for its brutality.
In 1853, gold was discovered in the interior, causing border disputes
with Brazil and Suriname.
