HISTORY
The islands were originally settled by Polynesian settlers.
The Marquesas Islands were the first to be settled around 300 A.D.
The Society Islands were settled about 800 A.D.

Portuguese explorers sighted the Tuāmotu-Gambier Archipelago in 1521.

Dutch sailors visited Bora Bora in 1722.

British explorers visited Tahiti in 1767.

British explorer James Cook visited Tahiti 1769.

In 1842 Tahiti and Tahuata were declared a French protectorate.

The capital of Papeetē was founded in 1843.

In 1880 France annexed Tahiti and claimed the Tuamotu Archipelago.

Rimatara and Rūrutu were annexed by France in 1889.

In 1946 Polynesians were granted French citizenship and the islands
became an overseas territory.

The islands' name was changed in French Polynesia in 1957.

In 1962 the Moruroa atoll (in the Tuamotu Archipelago) was chosen as a nuclear test site.
Tests were conducted underground after 1974.

The testing provoked international opposition and fuelled the Tahitian
independence movement.

In 1977, French Polynesia was granted partial internal autonomy.
Autonomy was extended in 1984.

In 1995, France caused widespread protests by resuming nuclear testing
at Fangataufa.

French Polynesia became a full overseas collectivity of France in 2003.

CONDITIONS
The economy is moderately developed.
Most of the population is either employed by the military or involved in tourism.
There is also a small manufacturing and agriculture sector.

A major export of French Polynesia is pearls from Tahiti

The islands are dependent on imported goods and financial assistance from France.
There is heavy French foreign direct investment.
Other main trading partners are the U.S, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

There have been serious challenges to traditional ways of life.
Since 1963 many Polynesians have moved to the capital.

13% of the population suffers from unemployment, especially women and young people.

SPIRITUAL CONDITIONS
Most of the population claims Christianity but for many it's purely tradition.
Many churches are nominal and personal faith is rare.
Many church goers have never read the Bible.

Due to tourism and increasing interest in Polynesian history, many animistic/occult practices are increasing.
There has also been an increase in syncretistic cults.

There is increasing materialism.
Although there is spiritual openness, but it seems to be shouted down by materialism.

There has been increasing immorality.

PRAYER NEEDS
Pray that the economy further develops.

Pray for those suffering from unemployment.

Pray that churches experience a revival

Pray that Christians exercise discernment and sound Biblical teaching.

Pray that occult/animistic spirits be bound.

Pray that the Gospel spread.
