Iceland a Nordic European island country.
It is located at the juncture of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.
Its closest neighbor is Greenland 180 miles to the west.

The population is about 320,000.
The capital and largest city is Reykjavík.

Iceland is sometimes called the “Land of Fire and Ice” because even though
it has glaciers and ice sheets, it also has active volcanoes, as well as many geysers
and hot springs.

HISTORY
The first people to come to Iceland were Irish monks in the early 9th century.

The first permanent inhabitants were Norse (Scandinavian) settlers who arrived in 874 A.D.
Over the following centuries, many Norsemen settled, bringing with them Gaelic serfs.

From 1262 to 1918, Iceland was ruled by Norway and later Denmark.

Iceland became independent in 1918.
A republic was declared in 1944.

Until the 20th century, the population relied mostly on fishing and agriculture.
During this time the country was very poor and undeveloped.

After WWII industrialization of the fisheries brought new prosperity.
By the 1990s Iceland was one of the world's wealthiest countries.

In 2008, the nation's banking system systemically failed, resulting in substantial political unrest.
The country is still in the process of recovering from the crisis.

CONDITIONS
Iceland is one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world.

Iceland's has seen a high level of immigrants, especially from Asia and the Middle East.

Iceland lacks natural resources and so is heavily dependent on fishing.
The economy is vulnerable to declining fish stocks and drops in world prices.


Hydroelectric power plants, aluminum smelting and tourism are also important.

Over the centuries deforestation, climatic deterioration and overgrazing has caused
a loss of critical topsoil due to erosion.
Three-quarters of Iceland's is affected by soil erosion.

There are high-profile disputes between conservationists wanting to preserve
the environment and industrialists wanting to cash in on resources.

Unemployment among young people is rather high.

SPIRITUAL CONDITIONS
Iceland is a very secular.

Over 80% of the population is Lutheran, but most are very nominal.
Churches suffer from low attendance and lack of spiritual vitality.

Over 8% of the population is non-religious.

Asatru, a form of Germanic Neo-Paganism, is the fastest growing religion.

Asian immigrants from Northeastern Thai are largly unreached

Pray that the Gospel spread.

Pray that occult spirits be bound.

Pray that Middle Eastern and Asian immigrants be exposed to the Gospel.
