HISTORY
Kenya has seen many different human migrations and ethnic groups.

The first inhabitants of Kenya were hunter-gatherer groups

Around 500 BC pastoralists migrated to Kenya from present-day Southern Sudan.

By the first millennium AD, Bantu speaking farmers settled the region.
The Bantu migration brought new developments in agriculture and iron working.

Arab traders began frequenting the Kenya coast around the 1st century AD.

Arab and Persian settlements were established along the coasts of Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique by the 8th century.
This area came to be called the Swahili Coast.

From the 10th to 15th century the Swahili Coast was a major center of ironworking and trade with the Middle East, Asia and Europe.
The Swahili Coast was heavily involved in the trade of ivory and slaves.

European exploration of the interior didn't began until the 19th century.

Britain established the East Africa Protectorate in 1895.
In 1920 it was called the Kenya Colony.

Kenya became independent in 1963.

CONDITIONS
Major industries include: agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining and minerals, energy, tourism
and financial services.

The country is a hub for Eastern and Central Africa's financial, communication and transportation services.

Over the years the country has suffered from ethnic division and violence.
Many ethnic groups suffer from marginalization and discrimination.

Kenya has fragile ecosystems and increasingly scarce water.
Droughts in the north have caused the deaths of 80% of the livestock.
Decrease in pasturelands have caused violent clashes among ethnic groups over resources.

There has been widening gaps between rich and poor.
Over half the people living in Kenya's towns and cities live in slums.

In Nairobi over a million people live in slums.
60,000 slum dwellers are children.

Slum dwellers in Nairobi are among the poorest and most malnourished people in Africa.

HIV/AIDS is spreading rapidly
14% of the adult population is infected.
The death toll from AIDS has left many AIDS orphans and street children.

Rapidly expanding urban slums and growing populations of street children/AIDS
orphans all point to future tensions.

Political and ethnic conflicts led to widespread violence in 2007-8
