including pirates, refugees from the Spanish Inquisition, shipwrecked sailors,
and deserters from Oliver Cromwell's army in Jamaica.

England took formal control of the Cayman Islands, along with Jamaica, in 1670.

Following several unsuccessful attempts, a permanent English-speaking
population was established during the 1730s.

Many slaves were imported from Africa.
Slavery was abolished in the island in 1834.

The islands were part of the Colony of Jamaica until 1962, when they became a Crown colony.

Many areas were flooded.
