HISTORY
Thailand has been inhabited for thousands of years
Thailand was heavily influenced by India
Thailand was part of the Kingdom of Funan (1st c-550 A.D.) and later
the Khmer Empire (802-1431)
After the fall of the Khmer Empire, various different states and kingdoms thrived in the area
Eventually the Thai established many of their own kingdoms
Sukhothai (1238-1583)
Ayutthaya (1350-1767)
Thonburi (1768-1782)
Rattanakosin (1782-Present)
During the Ayutthaya period, Thailand was one of the most vibrant
trading centers in Asia.
Slavery was widely practiced.
European traders arrived in the 16th century.
Despite European pressure, Thailand was never colonized.
The country acted as a buffer state between parts of Southeast Asia
that were colonized by Britain and France.
In 1932, a bloodless revolution ended centuries of absolute monarchy.
After WWII, Thailand went through decades of political instability
There were series of coups as one military regime replaced another,
During the 1980's the country stabilized both politically and economically.
CONDITIONS

Substantial industries are electronics, computer parts and cars.
As in many countries in East Asia, there is a growing spirit of entrepreneurship.
Tourism makes up about 6% of the economy.
The country has attracted a number of expatriates from developed countries.
There are over 2 million migrants in Thailand.
Only 600,000 are officially registered.
About 80% of the migrant population comes from Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos
Migrant workers face tough living conditions, unsafe working conditions,
poor wages, no rights, persecution, arbitrary arrest, detention and deportation.
A large number of Karen reside in Thailand, mostly in mountain villages on
the Thai-Burmese border.
There are significant communities of Shan people in Thailand.
Many Shan fled their original homes to avoid political persecution.
Without legal rights of residence they eke out an existence as semi-migrants.
Loss of hope often leads to broken families and addiction to drugs and alcohol.
Although prostitution is illegal it is openly practiced.
Many local officials have commercial interests in prostitution.
It is estimated that 3% of the economy is supported by prostitution.

as a sex tourism destination.

Children are often forced into prostitution or human trafficking
in order to pay off family debts.

corruption and ethnic bias on the part of officials

the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) and the People's Power Party (PPP)
The PAD's followers usually dress in yellow, called 'The yellow Shirts'
